year of Gram Parsons, for many strange reasons, and I See Hawks, a Byrds/Burritos
blend of brainy talent, benefited from all the posthumous attention paid
to Parsons. It’s also one of the best post-Byrds roots records since

November 17th Dan Frechette, “One of the most talented singer-songwriters I've heard in a long time.” - Mike Regenstreif, Sing Out Magazine, "There's something that sets a great songwriter apart from a mediocre one. April 11th, 2008, Joel Fafard, Joel Fafard
is that rare breed of
instrumentalist: the kind whose appeal reaches far beyond the
realm of serious guitar enthusiasts. The gifted slide fingerstyle
player writes stirring, melodic compositions that paint pictures
as vivid as any song with words. He introduces them on-stage with
hilarious commentary delivered in a "hillbilly farm-boy" stage persona that quickly
wins his audience over. And when he sinks his chops into
a number like "Face
Down in the Rhubarb," well, let's just say the serious guitar enthusiasts
aren't disappointed either.

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is Seeking Volunteers
and Volunteer Translators
Hello!
Here is a wonderful opportunity to gain work experience and cultural
knowledge! The 41st Smithsonian Folklife Festival is looking for volunteers.
The festival is to be held on June 27-July 1 and July 4-8.
This year we have three programs:
Mekong River : Connecting Cultures
Through craft demonstrations, dance and musical performances,
and hands-on activities, Mekong River: Connecting Cultures will introduce
visitors to the diverse cultures of the Mekong River. The Mekong region
has been a cradle and crossroads of cultures for many centuries and
more recently has become closely connected to the United States through
the more than two million Americans who trace their ancestry to Vietnam,
Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and the Chinese province of Yunnan. The Mekong
has many different meanings to the peoples of the region as well as
to Americans who may know little of its complexity. Mekong River:
Connecting Cultures will help broaden everyone's view.
Northern Ireland at the Smithsonian
Few regions of the world have contributed more to the formation
of the United States than Northern Ireland. Since the seventeenth century,
a succession of immigrants has had a profound impact on the development
of American culture, politics, education, science, religion, agriculture,
and industry. The Northern Ireland program will bring to Washington
the region's finest performers, artists, storytellers, craftspeople,
cooks, and workers to help explain, demonstrate, and celebrate their
culture.
Through dynamic Festival performances, demonstrations,
and educational activities, the program will highlight the rich history,
living traditions, and distinctive customs of this beautiful region. Reflecting
the complexity and creativity of Northern Ireland, the site will feature
traditional industries, such as Belleek pottery and Bushmills Irish Whiskey,
home-based crafts, such as lace- and bagpipe-making, and modern community
expressions, such as mural painting.
Roots of Virginia Culture: The Past is Present
By exploring the roots of Virginia's contemporary cultural traditions
and discovering how "the past is present," Roots of Virginia
Culture will mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown,
Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in what is now the United
States.
The program will bring to Washington performers, artists,
musicians, dancers, storytellers, cooks, farmers, and craftspeople to
help explain, demonstrate, and celebrate cultural traditions. Delegations
from Virginia's eight Native American tribes, West Africa, and Kent County,
England, will represent the Native, African American, and English roots
of the state. Other participants will sing gospel songs, ballads, blues,
and bluegrass; demonstrate horse skills and crafts; discuss historic restoration;
and cook with Virginia's products. For the first time, an English county
will participate in the Folklife Festival.;
We are also looking for volunteers who are fluent in the following languages:
Wolof, Khmer, Thai, Vietnamese, Lao, Chinese- Mandarin
and certified in ASL. Please visit www.folklife.si.edu
for more information and to complete the volunteer questionnaire.
You can print up the attached volunteer questionnaire and
mail it in to the address stipulated. Volunteers must be
16 and older, and will be asked to attend a volunteer orientation, which
is to be held on Saturday, June 23, 2007. Please feel free to share this
information. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Soyini George
