Dear folks,

After much consideration and ongoing communication with membership, we have decided to make a few alterations in our private showcase regulations for the upcoming International Folk Alliance conference in Memphis.

The stipulation on the number of private showcases performed by official Performance Alley artists during the conference has been removed. All Performance Alley artists may play as many private showcases as they desire.

Out of respect to the numerous artists that will not receive Performance Alley showcases and those that did not apply, I would hope that Performance Alley artists will not go overboard in the number of performances that you confirm. I am still very concerned that the integrity and value of Performance Alley not be diluted by private showcase appearances.

I request (not insist) that you please limit the number of private showcases you perform on your Performance Alley showcase night. We will have the Performance Alley schedule completed by next week in order for you to have the information you need to move forward.

It is still very critical that first timers and artists that do not have relationships with the private showcase presenters be given the opportunity to share this unique experience. As Folk Alliance, we will host two standard music floor rooms each night designed for first timers and those that normally would not have access to those performance slots. We will start taking requests for those performance slots in early December. Please look for an announcement regarding that next week.

The private showcase floors at the Memphis Marriott will be floors 18 and 19. We are holding the 17th floor as spillover in case the top two floors sell out while there is still demand for music floor rooms. At this time, there are still music floor rooms available.

What stays the same is that you must complete a private showcase contract in order to reserve a music floor room and that everyone that is part of a private showcase MUST be a Folk Alliance member and registered for the conference.

As always, we continue to adjust change based on the feedback of our membership. As I have said many times, you will never be penalized for speaking your mind. If I do not hear from you, it is impossible to build an organization and conference that works for you and that is always our goal at the Folk Alliance office.

We encourage you to utilize our many promotion opportunities to promote your official and private showcases. There is still space available in the exhibit hall, program book, totebag, and other sponsorship opportunities. For more information, please call or email Cindy in our office at cindy@folk.org. We have discounted space available in our group stands sponsored by GoGirlsMusic.com (Women In Music) and Local 1000 (Indie Artists). We also offer half booths that have replaced the old table tops at a reduced cost.

We still have volunteer opportunities available as well, and we encourage anyone that wants to attend but cannot justify or afford the registration price to volunteer. That is a great way to be part of the conference and a sure way to meet a large number of like minded people.

We are still in the process of finalizing our daytime and showcase schedules and they will be available by next week. All artists that submitted but do not receive an official Performance Alley showcase will still be able to register at the lowest price offered or sign up to volunteer. We will do everything possible to encourage your participation.

I would like to thank all of you for your patience while we deal with the growing pains and politics of your Folk Alliance organization. We expect membership to reach an all time high of over 3000 members by the end of December. That is close to double the membership numbers we were at one year ago. Thanks to everyone for your participation in this great organization. We will do our best to continue to serve your needs and desires. Again, please utilize our listserves or contact me directly to share your ideas and concerns. We cannot and should not move forward without input from membership.

Over the next few days we will be posting information regarding deadlines, schedules, and opportunities. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks for your time and thanks for being part of Folk Alliance.

Best to all,

Louis

Private Showcases Are Now Official

We are pleased to announce that the private showcases are back under the Folk Alliance official status. In order to make this happen, there must now be some simple paperwork, rules & regulations, and a small fee. In exchange, we will be able to ensure a positive, safe, and pleasurable experience on the music floors of the Marriott.

If you are interested in presenting a showcase on the music floors, please download the official " private showcase contract" from our website under " forms". Send your completed form to the Folk Alliance office via fax or mail. Once processed, we will provide you with a code for booking music floor rooms at the Marriott. You will not be able to book a music floor room without this code and a completed contract.

Private showcase artists and presenters will now be able to promote their music floor showcases throughout Folk Alliance including the exhibit hall, program book and totebag. Thanks for your patience as we worked through this delicate situation.

Standard Music Floor Rooms
After completion of the private showcase contract, you will be able to book your music floor room directly with the Marriott through their 800 number or their website.

Music Floor Suites
Due to the very low number of suites available on the three music floors at the Marriott, we will offer suites on a "per day/night" basis. The same contract and rules apply to the suites. Once you have completed your private showcase contract, we will work directly with you to confirm your suite. Depending on demand, suites may only be available on a one or two day basis. Each "suite day" provides access to your suite for 24 hours starting at 11:00am each day. Each presenter will be responsible for all hotel charges for that 24 hour period.
